Pear: a wet hem cannot land on the calf

Women’s clothes. The hip is the width. The shoulder gets help, not a costume pad.

On a pear, the hip passes the shoulder. In a Houston downpour the cloth clings right there. October’s normal at Intercontinental is 5.46 inches. This page does not invent a count of rainy afternoons. One storm is enough to soak a hem that drags, and a dark wet edge on the calf rings the widest line.

On this URL. Two undertones, same 5'4" woman, October haze. Color does not sit on the hip. The hem is checked at a 28-inch inseam and a 32-inch inseam, because a midi does not hit the same point on the leg.

The shoulder is helped by the shirt, not by a pad

A hard pad under a wet rain jacket looks stuck on, and it holds water. What balances is a shirt with a little structure at the shoulder — a seam, not foam — and a pant or skirt that does not end on the calf. The calf is the second width. A wet hem there draws a ring.

Storm dayShirt with a soft shoulder, worn out if tucking grips the hip. Straight through the hip, no flare that adds width, and no pencil. Rain jacket with a little shoulder and no belt at the hip. A belt there underlines what the rain is already clinging to. Closed shoe, low block. A thin heel catches in a wet grate.

A midi drafted for 32 inches lands wrong at 28

28-inch inseam

A midi cut for a regular inseam lands on the calf. The wet hem circles the width. On this page, at 28 inches, the ankle is clear. It is not “hiked a little.” It is cut above the point the storm will stain.

32-inch regular

Do not lengthen that cut to mid-calf to use the height. Mid-calf, wet, is the ring. At 32 inches the hem can be longer only if it stays off the calf: ankle, not calf.

September, at 90.4 °F and 4.71 inches, wants the same skirt and a lighter shirt. The pencil does not enter September, October, or November in this folder. November’s 3.87 inches are still enough to soak a dragging hem. The cut does not relax because the high fell to 72.6 °F.

Questions

What skirt does a pear wear when it rains in Houston?

One that does not end on the calf and is not a pencil. October at IAH totals 5.46 inches. A wet hem on the calf rings the hip.

Does the color go on the hip or the shoulder?

On the shoulder. Warm undertone: light pant, color up. Cool undertone: stone shoulder, burgundy pant. Camel on the hip goes dingy in October haze and reads wider.

Does a belt help?

Not at the hip. That is where the rain is already marking the width. The jacket can have a little shoulder, and it stays unbuckled over the hip.
